Not contented with the dictates of society on what and how women should be, Nagarathma struggled to pierce the field monopolised by men-politics. As part of the Grama Panchayat, she was able to promote the rights and welfare of women. From simple proper distribution of ration cards to ensuring proper and transparent systems in awarding housing facilities to people, she was able to promote women's rights by fighting hard against the corruption that ate much of the resources initially intended for women.
Her most important contribution to society from among her causes was her success in motivating and involving more women in politics. Coming from a society and community that looks down upon a woman, Nagarathma endured many obstacles not only from her own family and relatives but also from the community. With her successes which include the upliftment of the lives of persons with disabilities (by educating them and giving them trainings so that they can earn for themselves), she was able to open the minds of her community.
