Name:  MS. MAGIMAI
Civil status:  Married
No. of children:  3 (2 daughters and 1 son)
Country:  Tamil Nadu, India
Occupation/Sector:  Campaigner and organiser, Dalit activist
Organisation:  Society for Rural Education and Development (SRED); Tamil Nadu Dalit Women's Movement (TNDWM)
Issues working on:  Dalit and women's rights; Human rights

Born in a rural Dalit family, Magimai is a champion of Dalit women's rights. Her association with SRED exposed her to the sufferings of Dalits which made her commit to the cause. She has boldly and courageously addressed several issues with success despite many challenges. In one instance, she was arrested, humiliated and her clothes were publicly stripped off her by men and the police. This violation was done on her just because she fought for the rights of Dalit women and children. The Dalit children were required to walk an additional three (3) kilometers going to school compared to others who belonged to the other caste system because of a simple edifice (statue of Dr. Ambedkar, who is ironically a leader who push for the civil rights of the "untouchables") constructed in her community. Despite the violations done against her, she remained courageous and appealed the matter before the SC/ST commission. Her efforts were not futile because she succeeded in regaining the rights of the Dalits to use the same path as that of other castes. This is one of several interventions that she courageously fought to assert the rights of Dalits, especially of women and children.
